Dr. Sumati Patil | Surface Science | Best Researcher Award.

Dr. Patil earned her Ph.D. in Physics from SP Pune University, where her thesis focused on the development of scanning tunneling microscopic techniques for the investigation of nanostructures. She also holds an M.Sc. in Physics with a specialization in Material Science from the same university, with a thesis on imaging parameters and noise in scanning tunneling microscopy of nanoparticles. Dr. Patil completed her B.Sc. in Physics Honours from SP Pune University, graduating as the university subject topper with a remarkable 93%.

🔍 Research Focus:

Dr. Patil’s research interests include the design and development of probe microscopy techniques, particularly scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). She specializes in the chemical synthesis of metal nanoparticles and the growth and characterization of 2D materials, such as epitaxial and CVD graphene. Her work also extends to the synthesis and study of van der Waals heterostructures and self-assembled molecular monolayers on various metallic substrates.

Throughout her career, Dr. Patil has received numerous accolades for her groundbreaking research. Notably, she was awarded the UGC’s Dr. D. S. Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship for her work at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Her innovative contributions to the field of nanotechnology and microscopy have been widely recognized and celebrated.

Dr. Patil is currently a Fixed Term Scientist at CNR – Istituto Officina dei Materiali (IOM) in Trieste, Italy, where she focuses on 2D materials and surface science. She has previously held fellowships at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in collaboration with CNR-IOM, and has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and IISER Pune. Her extensive experience includes optimizing deposition parameters for boron-doped graphene, characterizing molecular interactions with graphene and metal surfaces, and developing in-house built point contact spectroscopy setups.
